How great would it be, if during your run in the park, you could charge your phone? Israeli renewables firm Sologic has created a tree that sprouts off both Wi-Fi and electricity! Their goal is to have the trees serve as a public hub of activity in popular common areas. There is a small installation that is set up to provide this convenient facility. The hope with these public set ups is to bring more people outdoors and into the world to enjoy the environment.

Along with bringing more people into nature, Sologic describes the eTree as being an integral part of the social-environmental enterprise. They hope it will bring about discussions about being sustainable and environmentally conscious in our daily lives.

How it Works

NBC News says that the eTree uses solar power panels mounted on metal branches to bring in energy and generate electricity from the sun. Through this electrical power, people will be able to use the USB ports for charging things like cellphones or GoPros. There will also be Wi-Fi routers and an LCD screen providing information. This tree will also serve as a central lighting source for nighttime use. Depending on the installation, there could also be benches for wresting and water fountains.

Similar Experiments

A few years ago, Green Sun Rising developed something similar with Solar Benches, and at the UK Glastonbury Festival last year, Wi-Fi cows helped bring in the crowds. Those who attended remarked that they felt a sense of calm because they knew their phone would work for a longer period of time.

Scope

There are plans to expand the production and scope of this tree so that it can become a normal, everyday thing. The tree already has a home in Israel’s Ramat Hanadiv public gardens, according to Headlines and Global News, but there are hopes to expand the tree to public parks, universities, airports, stadiums, theme parks, and even zoos! The website InHabitat has several mock-ups of what the tree could look like in some of these environments.
